Want to write to an MP but don’t know how to start? Well, we have some guidelines for you. Just follow these steps below to help craft the perfect MP letter.

Step 1: Research!

Before sending out a letter, research your MP. Who is it? What do they stand for? What party are they in? How can they help you? Answers to these questions will help you tug on your MP’s heartstrings while writing the letter and be more receptive to your concerns. Don’t know who your MP is? That’s okay! Go to ourcommons.ca/members/en to find out!

Step 2: Use a template!

If you don’t know where to begin, that’s okay. You can use a template! We have the perfect template that you can use to discuss Canada’s global pandemic response. Just remember to use your MP’s name, your name, and why the issue is important to you.

Step 3: Send it out!

Once you have used the template or written your letter, it is time to send it out! Remember to be respectful in your email and that it might take your MP some time to respond. Like every public official, they have a busy work schedule. So, be patient. However, if they do not respond for a long time, it doesn’t hurt to send the letter out again!

Step 4: CC important people!

Before you click the final send button CC other officials who can help with your cause. For example, include the Minister of Health’s email address when sending out letters discussing COVID. The more people that you send it out to, the better. You need to get your voice out there.

Once you have followed these steps, you can send your letter out! Yay! Now congratulate yourself on this important step. You have contacted your MP and you have certainly deserved it.
